Day by day

An indicative route. Every departure is private, so the order, the pace and the overnight stops can all be changed around your dates.

Arrival transfer and a first evening in the capital. Route briefing over dinner, including the wildlife chance levels for your specific dates and what the weather is likely to do.
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar. Meals: dinner.

Gandantegchinlen monastery and the National Museum of Mongolia, used as the frame for everything you will see in the countryside rather than as a sightseeing box to tick.
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar. Meals: breakfast, lunch.

Drive west to Khustai and out at dusk for the takhi, the only truly wild horse left in the world, reintroduced here from zoo stock. Marmots and red deer are near-certain on the same drive.
Overnight: Khustai National Park. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

A long band of dune country in the middle of the grassland. Camel riding with a herding family, and your first proper night with no light on the horizon in any direction.
Overnight: Elsen Tasarkhai. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

The imperial capital and the monastery built from its stones. The first place on the route where the empire storyline becomes physical rather than narrated.
Overnight: Kharkhorin. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Into the valley for the fourth of the five animals. A working day with a yak herding family, including the dairy work that fills most of a summer morning.
Overnight: Orkhon Valley. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

A deliberate slow day at the hot springs after four days of movement, with an afternoon free for riding or for doing nothing at all.
Overnight: Tsenkher. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Domestic flight west into the Altai. A different language, a different faith and a different landscape, reached in two hours instead of three days of driving.
Overnight: Bayan-Olgii. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

A day with a Kazakh eagle hunting family and the fifth animal. How a bird is taken, trained, hunted with and eventually released, explained by the person who does it.
Overnight: Altai foothills. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Fly back to Ulaanbaatar and continue north the same day. A transit day, kept as short as the flight schedule allows.
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Forest and lake at the edge of the taiga, and the reindeer herding culture that completes the set of five. Cooler, greener and quieter than everything before it.
Overnight: Lake Khovsgol. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Fly back to the capital, with time for the cashmere and craft shops before the departure transfer.
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar. Meals: breakfast.
