Golden Eagle Festival Mongolia: a complete guide

What the festival actually is

Held in Bayan-Olgii in the far west, the Golden Eagle Festival is a competition between Kazakh eagle hunters, judged on how well a bird responds to its handler. It is not a show built for visitors, which is both the appeal and the reason it can feel chaotic if you arrive without context.

  • Usually held in early October, with a smaller spring event in some years
  • Requires a domestic flight to Olgii plus a road transfer
  • Cold: expect below freezing overnight even in early October
  • Two competition days, plus travel days either side

Is it worth the distance?

If you are coming to Mongolia primarily for photography or for the Kazakh culture of the west, yes. If you have seven days total and want to see the country broadly, the flight west will eat most of your trip. In that case a single eagle hunting family visit inside a wider route gives you most of the encounter for a fraction of the travel.
