When to visit Mongolia: a month-by-month guide

The short answer

September. The light is at its best, the crowds have gone, the grass has turned gold, and the days are still warm enough to spend outdoors. If September does not work, June is the next strongest month.

Month

Conditions

Best for

May

Cool, green, very quiet

Newborn livestock, empty sites

June

Warming, long days

Riding, northern forest, families

July

Warmest and busiest

Naadam, full access everywhere

August

Warm, some rain

Families, wellness, general travel

September

Clear, golden, cool nights

Everything; the strongest month

October

Cold nights, sharp light

Eagle festival, quiet travel

What most people get wrong

Travellers plan around July because of Naadam, then find the festival crowds and the peak-season logistics harder than expected. If the festival is not your reason for coming, avoid mid-July entirely.
